The Chattanooga Pulse spotlighted how the Kitchen Incubator of Chattanooga empowers local food industry entrepreneurs through community-focused events like the annual KIC Food Truck Festival & Expo. The festival, featuring more than 30 food trucks, local market vendors, and live music, serves as a showcase for the city’s growing mobile-food industry.
Membership Manager Pat Rowe, who also operates BBQ Rowe, discussed how KIC’s mission aligns with the needs of the expanding food-truck community. The new outdoor patio—designed to seat 75 guests—creates a dedicated space for families and food lovers to enjoy local cuisine without the limitations of drive-up dining.
The article traces KIC’s roots to LAUNCH Chattanooga’s efforts to provide commercial kitchen access to underserved entrepreneurs. After acquiring the former Virginia College Culinary School building in 2019, the organization developed the incubator just as the pandemic began. During COVID-19, KIC entrepreneurs and partners pivoted to launch a senior-meal relief initiative that delivered 100,000 meals to local residents in need.
Today, KIC supports 40+ businesses across multiple growth stages—ranging from start-ups and caterers to full-fledged food trucks and packaged-goods producers. Entrepreneurs gain access to KIC’s 10,000-square-foot facility, complete with commercial kitchen stations, refrigeration, and storage—keeping them compliant with health regulations and ready to grow.
As Rowe explained, “This keeps them legal because in order to have a commercial business like this, you have to have a commercial commissary space.” He emphasized that the incubator offers flexible membership plans, hands-on equipment training, and a strong network of community support.
The Food Truck Festival & Expo demonstrates how KIC not only helps launch businesses but also revitalizes the Eastgate Town Center neighborhood by drawing in families, foodies, and community members from across the region.
“Come out with the family, and have a great time,” Rowe said. “Come out and support the entrepreneurs. Come out and support local small businesses.”
